proud mommy moments...
so you think these will be the moments where your child takes a first step, says his first word or something equally big and momentous.
so not the case.
to date, my proudest mommy moments include getting ethan to poop on the potty and not feeling like i am going to throw up when i get thrown up on.
ahhh, what fun.
getting ethan to poop on the potty has been the hardest, most frustrating thing i have done (and we still aren't completely there yet, i'd say we're about 85% there....after a year of trying...with little to no success until about a 6 weeks ago) and it has cost more money than a person would think potty training would cost, what with the treats, the prizes, the different potties and potty accessories, the extra underwear (since we often go through 4-5 pairs a day) and the millions and millions of wipes....i love the flushable ones, but they are pricey! he is so very close and i know when he starts doing it regularly without us even having to think about it, it will be a wonderful day for sure!!!
getting thrown up on and having to deal with stomach stuff in general is not my thing. not that it is really anyones thing, but i am about as far from it as a person can be. i run the other direction when someone tells me their stomach hurts. i get out of there before even finding out what that could mean. i have always wondered how i would handle it when i had kids. other people i talked to said it is different when it is your kid and i didn't really believe them. i was fine with the spit-up and that gave me hope. if i could handle that (and i did since both of the boys spit-up until they were about 6 months) then i was on my way to other things. i tried to make a deal with lance. he could handle the stomach stuff and i would handle diapers. poop didn't scare me the same way vomit does. thankfully our kids are fairly healthy and we've stayed away from awful experiences, but poor ethan cannot take liquid medicine for the life of him. i've tried almost every imaginable way (to include, in a bad mommy moment, hiding cough medicine in dr. pepper) to get him to take it with very little success. most often liquid medicine = gagging and throwing up. oh joy! thankfully at the age of two there are way more options for taking medicine and chewable tablets are allowed for staples such as tylenol and amoxicillan. ethan does well with chewables and tends to take them without much coaxing. we're still looking for a viable cough/congestion medicine that comes in chewable form...i've been looking at some health food stores and hopefully have found an option that will work. at least i hope it does, i paid for the expedited shipping since we're in the midst of an awful cough right now.
for us with coughing, comes throwing up. poor ethan, last night was rough and i am proud to say was the first time he threw up on me (or in the vicinity of me) that i didn't get nauseated. and this was an awful one...one where both of us had to get undressed and throw everything in the laundry. i guess i am making progress! and i am happy to report that ethan is much better today and hopefully the cough-barfing is behind us for a few months at least.
who knew that those would be my exciting milestones?!?

Hope he feels better soon. I understand the potty - I just came back from buying MORE stuff. And the pull-ups - they cost twice as much as the diapers we are trying to get away from!
