foodie friday: easter cake balls

i made the chick cake pops from bakerella last year and loved them, but they were very time consuming. this year my sister and i decided to try the cake balls instead. quick and easy and they turned out really cute! i still think i'll do the chick pops for easter for the boys, but at least now i don't feel like i have to since i've already done one easter treat for the year.

we followed this recipe and used boxed red velvet cake mix and canned cream cheese frosting. emily was our little helper! we dipped the cake balls in white chocolate candiquick (since that was what we could find at wal-mart on short notice) and it worked really well. i think it would have been fun to have some of the chocolate be pink or another springy color, but we didn't have any way to change it since you have to use special candy coloring. we decorated with sprinkles and they were done!

egg dyeing!

as soon as i got the april martha stewart living issue i knew i wanted to try the eggs from the front cover. i checked out the how-to section and they actually looked doable. yay! i brought the supplies to make the stickers with me when we left for our maryland trip so we could do them with all the kids. we started by using the little punches to cut out some sheet vinyl, the girls definitely enjoyed helping with that. we did butterflies, cornflowers and little leaves, but there are tons of different punches to choose from.

after we got all the eggs ready, we took the kids out front and had them dye their eggs. definitely fun, but stressful with all the colors and kids. plus ethan insisted on standing up on the sloped lawn and i was so afraid he was going to lose his balance and land right in the middle of all the dye. they definitely had fun!
we kept a few eggs back so my mom, sister and i could work on some after the kids had done theirs. we got some really neat results experiementing with using the different dyes and stickers. this is definitely and easter craft that i'll be doing again!

HAPPY SPRING!!!

pre-easter festivities!

today was filled with lots of fun pre-easter activites! time with family, easter egg hunts, chicks and bunnies and egg decorating.

this morning we took ethan to an egg hunt that some friends of ours put on in ardmore's central park. it was lots of fun and there was a great turn-out. ethan, once again, was a fan of seeing what was inside each of his eggs and could not figure out that if he filled his basket with more eggs, he'd have more candy. too interested in seeing what was in the eggs he got. grand total this hunt, 7. but he still had lots of fun! after picking up the eggs, he found a shopping cart that he LOVED! this may have been his favorite part of the day.

we ventured over to the play toys and my brave little guy decided to go down the biggest, fastest slide i have seen at a playground. i didn't have a picture because i was too scared of trying to catch him. he did great, though he didn't come down that slide again!

after the egg hunt and a much needed nap, we headed over to grandmother and grandfather's to visit with family and do some egg decorating. let's just say, dyeing eggs with little ones is not an easy task. but we got lots done and didn't make too much of a mess.

we finished off the day with a yummy BBQ dinner and ethan loved getting to eat with his cousins!

easter treats

thanks to bonnie i found this super cute easter treat idea. original recipe can be found at this blog, which i now follow because she has such fun and unique ideas! how i wish i had the time (and patience!!) to try them all. i ended up making 2 batches - one practice (chicks turned out too pale) and then the final batch which i was going to take to the easter egg hunt on saturday morning. here are the little guys! fun and springy! they did take forever though, so it will probably be a while before i attempt something like this again. but even lance agreed (and he is not a huge fan of white chocolate or yellow cake) that they were really, really good.

easter egg hunt

we had a practice easter egg hunt at our playgroup today. all of the kids are 4 and under, so it was really more of an easter egg pick up in the middle of a field. but lots of fun, nonetheless. there were tons of eggs and all the kids were really excited! ethan knew what to do this year, but was much more interested in opening up the eggs and seeing what was in there than gathering up a bunch. i think he managed to grab about 5 total. he seemed content to just keep opening them up hoping that something else would appear inside.

since it was beautiful weather, the kids got to play outside after the egg hunt. the woman who hosted had some great outdoor toys and ethan was in love with this front end loader toy. he kept putting things in the bucket and then dumping them. he had a blast and i could barely keep him off that thing.

like father, like son. wednesday was also the day that lance picked up his bobcat/skid-steer in oklahoma city. pictures will surely follow in the coming weeks. ethan loves all sorts of construction equipment, so i am excited to let him see the bobcat. i know he'll be eager to climb right up!

easter cookies

since i never got around to decorating cookies (or the gingerbread house we bought) with ethan at christmas, i decided to do some easter cookies. i made these amazing sugar cookies on sunday and ethan and i did some decorating this morning. he really enjoyed it and actually did more decorating that i thought he would. of course, his idea of decorating and mine are a bit different, but we had a great time and i think they turned out cute for our first attempt! i think i'll make another batch closer to easter since they were so good. oh and you can tell from all these pictures that, like any good chef, ethan did his fair share of taste testing.
